Bloggy Business

There's a lot of chatter out there. Blog chatter. About a certain blog conference that will be held in Nashville in February.

Seems like everywhere I turn in the blog world people are talking about whether or not they'll attend. And I'm getting the feeling that it's like junior high again--all the popular girls will be attending and all of us not-so-popular girls will be sitting on the sidelines watching.

Truth be told, I probably couldn't go anyway. My winter and spring are already getting filled up with various travel-related activities.

But here's what I'd like to talk about today: growing the blog.

If you're a blogger, I'd really like to hear from you about whether you've ever attended a blogging conference. If so, was it worth it? Why? If you've never attended a blogging conference, why not? What are your thoughts about blogging conferences?

If you're not a blogger, you can still help me out. Tell me what you think would help me grow my blog. And if you'd even go one step further by emailing one person who you think would enjoy reading my ramblings and sending them the link to my blog that would be completely amazing.

And finally, if you haven't noticed that little button off to the left that says "Follow" go find it and click on it. Followers make me very, very happy.

O.K., so now head on down to the place that says "comments" and talk to me.

  1. Shelly, I just became a follower! I’ve been subscribing for months, of course, but now you can see my tiny little face in your box over there! :) I really enjoy your blog, so I’m just not sure how you could improve.

But I can talk about blogging conferences. I went to the one you’re talking about last year – when I didn’t know ANYONE! And, honestly, I freaked out. I felt VERY MUCH like I was a junior high outcast. But really, that came from ME, not from THEM. Everyone was very nice, and since then, I’ve made several bloggy friends who will be there this year. Did the conference improve my blog? I think so. Did it teach me everything I wanted to know and more? Not really. But it did show me more options and possibilities and questions to ask. My blog is SUCH a work in progress, so I love getting all the new ideas and input I can. So, I’m going to the conference in February. Partly to see my blog friends. Partly to learn more. And I’m hoping I don’t let myself get all junior high again – either in feeling left out or in making anyone else feel left out. Because that’s definitely not what it’s about.

Did that even answer your question? What a long rambling comment! :)

  3. Thanks, Mary. That is a great answer! You're just that much further (farther?) ahead of me in the blog business, so it's great to hear your thoughts. I think the networking would be really helpful, although hard for an introvert like me. :)

Thanks so much, Sheroll. Love having you as a commenter!!! :)

  5. I attended the conference of which you speak, and I LOVED it. I've never been to any other conference but She Speaks, and I have to say Blissdom was wonderful -- open, friendly, small enough not to be overwhelming. I am going again and I'd LOVE to see you there.

I think blogging conferences are great for building community, but I definitely learned from it too. I often struggle with the purpose of my blog, and there were several speakers who made a big impact on me and have helped me shape the purpose of my blog in the past year.

I have followed you on the Friend Feed thing, and you know I'm already a reader and friend. :-)

The blogosphere is SO saturated, I really think that it's hard to stand out, even when you're a strong writer.

I'm SO glad we met at She Speaks. I already considered you a friend, but that just enriched the blogging relationship so much more. :-)

  6. Well, I blog. But as you know, it's totally a hobby thing for me. Just my online art journal.

However, I recently joined something called "Cyberscribes", which is a chat board for calligraphers to discuss issues regarding, well, calligraphy! ;-) (I'm such a geek.)

Anyway, I digress. Since joining that group, I noticed a huge (for me) increase in traffic to my blog. Actual readers, not just the people that accidentally found me after googling something.

So, perhaps there's something like Cyberscribes out there for writers. Just a thought!

  7. Oh, forgot to answer your question. No, I've never been to a blogging conference. And I don't think I'd ever go. This is just a hobby for me.
