Happy Birthday to Me!!! *giveaway*

It feels weird to even write this because it feels somehow self-serving and arrogant. But, hey, everyone has a birthday. They come around once a year. And this year I feel like sharing it with all of you.

First, a little story. This past weekend I went to a writer's conference at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI. I was sitting in one of the sessions by a memoirist named Rhoda Janzen (who wrote a hilarious memoir called Mennonite in a Little Black Dress), when she suddenly said, "I will be 47 next Tuesday." Well, I immediately sat up in my chair and looked with surprise at my friend, Sarah, sitting next to me because I have never in my life met someone who had the exact same birthday as me. I do have a friend who shares my birthday, but she's not the same age as me. Rhoda and I were born on the exact. same. day. Somehow I find that weird and interesting.

So anyway, I went up to her after the session and introduced myself and wished her a happy birthday. I'm sure she'll never remember me or our brief meeting, but I will. And I wonder how she will be celebrating today. I wonder if she will do something more than go to the gym, walk the dog, and do laundry.

I hope so.

Anyway, in honor of Rhoda's birthday (and mine), I've picked up a few goodies that I'd like to give away to one lucky reader/commenter. A bit of a "favorite things" giveaway, only not quite so grand as Oprah's.

First, because I love books, I'm giving a $10 gift card to Borders. Second, because I equally love coffee, a $10 gift card to Starbucks. And third, because I love clothes and because I was in the store yesterday buying some things for Maggie, a $10 gift card to Old Navy.

Just leave me a comment below. I'll give you a second chance to win if you'll follow me. (And please be sure I have your email address so that I can contact you if you win.)

I'll announce the winner on Friday, so tell all your friends to come on by!

Happy Day!

Shelly

  3. Happy birthday, Shelly!! I'm so glad to know you!

When I went to college, I met a girl who had my exact same birthday. It totally freaked me out. Since then, I've learned that Katie Holmes also was born the same day I was, and that also freaks me out. I mean - does that mean that in some alternate universe I could be married to Tom Cruise?? (Kidding. Of course. But it's still a little bit weird to me!)

I hope you have a GREAT day!

  4. If I have my baby today, in honor of your birthday, do I automatically win??

Either way, I am signing up. Happy Birthday, dear friend, you are such a blessing to me!

  6. Happy Birthday Shelly! I have met 2 people who shared my b-day, sadly one has passed on, and the other I have not seen since I was oh 12? He was actually the same age, born on my birthday and if I remember correctly born in the same city!! Here's to you today! Happy Birthday

  8. It’s easy to get caught up in the ‘day to day’
Walk the dog, go to the gym, wash piles of laundry that never go away.

My new favorite thing is checking a blog
I read about great adventures; losing myself in the words and get in a fog.

I’m not quick to comment every time
I think about what I read and rehash it in my mind.

I have a few favorites, this being one
I check quite often to read what Shelly’s done.

Happy Birthday to one of my favorite authors. Hope you have a great day!

  10. Happy Birthday, Shelly! As I read your post I thought, "I have had someone that I've shared my exact birthday with and I've known them my whole life." In fact, we were born just minutes apart -- that's because I am a twin! I'd love to meet someone else who shares my exact date and isn't a genetic match!

  18. Are you kidding? Follow you? I already follow your every word!

    Did I say, "Happy Birthday?"

    Well Happy, happy birthday girl.

And I like it that you're just a tad older than me. A very small tad.

  20. Happy birthday Shelly. Sharing birthday can be fun! Did you know that you share with Adolf Hitler and Colin Powell?
As for me, my birthday lands on a day when coupons expire. Now that's exciting!! Seriously, I look at the coupon and there it is, printed either on the top or bottom in bold print 1-31-....
Here's to another year filled with blessings and extra sprinkles *clink*

  23. I don't know anyone who has my same birthday, but one of my very best friends in Cincinnati has my exact wedding anniversary and we've both been married for 25 years today!

Hard to believe we also graduated 25 years ago!

    Happy, Happy Birthday Shelly!

  24. Happy Birthday Shelly!
I saw your article in Internet Cafe about "God giving us more than we can handle". I really like your thoughts and wanted to tell you that they impacted my day. I grew up in Michigan, great place! I have three daughters myself and gosh do I know a lot about still learning how to lean on God! They are 11,12,16. Blessings to your new year!

  26. One of these birthdays, I'm going to kidnap you and we'll go walk on the beach and blow bubbles and read and talk and do all of our favorite things. Love that idea! In the meantime, I could go by Starbucks and Borders which are out at the beach, set up my chair on the beach and pray for you. THen read. That works too! Lif'es happiness to you.

  27. Happy Birthday to you!!! Hope your day is filled with hugs and kisses and phone calls from those who love you! I don't believe I have ever met anyone born on the EXACT same day as me. Although in my small hometown there are 4 other people born on the same day, just not the same year. Here's to another year filled with God's blessings and tender mercies! Again, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! And thank YOU for the generous giveaway! Blessings! Robbin
